The Legend of King Arthur


Another inventive and spectacular Summer show from the York Theatre Royal team who brought you the hugely successful The Railway Children, The Wind in the Willows and Peter Pan. The Arthurian legends are brought to life with live music, stunning sword fights and magical sorcery.
In this fantastic family show discover how Arthur was given his powerful sword, Excalibur, by the Lady of the Lake. Meet Merlin the Wizard, Arthur's trusted teacher and friend. Learn of the love between brave Lancelot and Queen Gwenevere and of the battle which would bring an end to the treasured realm of Camelot.
Make a day of it in Camelot this summer. Learn to become a Knight at Knight school, become a master of Heraldry, have a go at Jousting and eat at the Round Table. But watch out for the Dragon!

Free Activities To Enjoy Throughout The Day
All day free, fun activities will include; Jousting to hit a target, stocks with sponges, games and stories. Birds of Prey will be available to handle on the theatre patio during the summer.

The Quest

A chance to take part in a free treasure hunt that will allow you to explore secret backstage areas, meet the Lady of the Lake and discover the phrase that will help Arthur face his destiny. Look out for the Dragon as you explore
The Quest will open before each performance at 12:30pm & 5:45pm. Free to ticket holders.

Knight School

Have you got what it takes to become a knight of Camelot?  Come and test your skills, wits and agility at knight school.  Complete King Arthur’s challenges to earn a place at his round table.  In this one hour workshop you’ll learn about the knights of Camelot, play games, meet new people and have lots of fun.  Oh, and you might get knighted too...
Ages: 7 - 11
Times: Tuesdays - Saturdays during the run of The Legend of King Arthur, 12 noon - 1pm each day.
Cost: £5
Meeting Place: Main foyer

Heraldry Workshop

Create your very own coat of arms!  Come to Arthur’s armoury and discover the secrets behind the symbols.  Find out about the pictures that illustrate your family name, or invent your own, and make a stunning shield to take away with you at the end. 
Ages: Suitable for all the family.
Times: Tuesdays - Saturdays during the run of The Legend of King Arthur. The Armoury is open 11:30am - 1:30pm and 5:30pm - 6:30pm. Drop in any time (we recommend giving yourself at least 30mins)
Cost: £4
Meeting place: Keregan Room, follow signs to the Armoury from the main foyer
